Wayzata, Deephaven, and Orono
The name of Wayzata was originally derived from the Sioux language for “north shore.” This name well suits this tightly knit community which is located on the north shore of breathtaking Lake Minnetonka. Non-native settlers first arrived in the Wayzata area in 1852. A town soon grew up around them, and growth increased even more with the arrival of the railroad. The community has since been a quiet residential area and a vacation spot for Twin City leisure seekers on the prowl for some peace and quiet. Its many parks and gardens offer residents a place to retreat from their everyday woes.

The Wayzata Independent Public School district serves eight west suburban municipalities (including parts of Orono) and spans over 38 square miles with seven elementary schools, three middle schools and a high school. The district’s unique strengths include dedication and well-trained instructors, about 65% of which hold Master’s degrees. These schools have consistently scored at the highest levels of statewide standardized testing.

Though small in size, Wayzata is equipped with a retail center featuring dozens of unique and premium specialty shops as well as many other fine businesses situated beside the stretch of lakefront in more than half a dozen shopping areas. This bastion of retail trade is now accompanied by a financial and office center. Wise planning has permitted the city to maintain open space and park lands, preserving the small town aura which makes Wayzata a truly unique community.

Deephaven is named for its harbor on Lake Minnetonka. Thanks to its proximity to this body of water, it is known for providing an abundance of recreational opportunities, including plenty of water sports. The community has six beaches and 76 docks and so is sure to please boating, swimming and fishing enthusiasts. Winter brings avid ice fishermen, whose small fish houses dot the lake throughout the season. Those who prefer to stay on dry land can visit Deephaven’s ice rinks, parks, hiking trails, tennis courts, soccer fields and ball diamonds.

Incorporated in 1955, Orono encompasses 24 square miles – eight of which are covered by lakes. Like Wayzata and Deephaven, the town offers plenty of recreational options to residents. The community’s rolling terrain encompasses more than a thousand acres of wetlands as well as creeks and forests. Public and private golf courses, neighborhood and community parks, marinas and points of access to Lake Minnetonka ensure that Orono residents will always have something to do in the great outdoors.

Wayzata, Deephaven and Orono benefit tremendously from their ideal location on Lake Minnetonka’s north shore. Not only do residents enjoy spectacular views and unmatched recreational opportunities, they are just a stone’s throw away from all the fun and excitement of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. With good schools, thriving business communities and easy access to big-city amenities, Wayzata, Deephaven and Orono are the perfect hometown for businesses and families alike.
